Wheeling Jesuit Better Than Ever
During its first 50 years of existence, Wheeling Jesuit University has done much for its community and has helped thousands of young men and women get good starts in their careers. As the institution concludes a year-long celebration of its first half-century, it appears that the best years lie ahead. Founded as Wheeling College and incorporated on Sept. 25, 1954, the institution has grown not just in physical facilities and enrollment but also in service during its first 50 years. That has happened in large measure, we believe, because Wheeling College was established on an excellent foundation. When then-Bishop John J. Swint and the Maryland Province of the Society for Jesus founded the college, they had two basic goals. First, they wanted to provide students with the skills to succeed in life. Second, they wanted to instill desires to serve others. That philosophy is summed up by the university's motto: "Let Your Light Shine."

Gambol Reunion to Benefit Katrina Relief
Back in 1955, a group of students, led by Wheeling College administrator Rev. Edward Gannon, S.J. decided that staging a musical show might just be the perfect way to end the school year. The name Gambol was chosen, because it expresses the sense of frolic and fun that was the inspiration in the early years. Wheeling Jesuit University Theater Guild, in cooperation with student government and the Wheeling Jesuit alumni office will be sponsoring a Hurricane Katrina Relief Gambol Reunion at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8 in Troy Theater. The performance will feature Wheeling Jesuit alumni along with current students in a musical tribute to past Gambol productions. Local performer and alumna Vera Barton-Caro, class of 1982, will serve as master of ceremonies.

Charter Guild Seeks New Members

Like the University it serves, Wheeling Jesuit's Charter Guild is now celebrating its 50th Anniversary.

To commemorate this occasion, new Charter Guild president and Wheeling Jesuit alumna, Joni Watkins '83, is seeking 100 or more new members to join the group.

"I want to observe the 50th anniversary in a meaningful way and gaining new members is so important to our organization," said Watkins.

"We welcome former students, family members and friends of the University who seek to support Jesuit education in the Upper Ohio Valley in this way."

She hopes to attract new members as soon as possible so that they might attend the October meeting. Over the years, the members of the Charter Guild have been a driving force behind many activities on campus, raising a total of $88,978 in support of University programs, which include but are not limited to the Buckius-Burke Scholarship, the Buckius Loyola Scholarship, the Lewis Fund, Greene and Washington Co. Scholarship, Students in Union, the Annual Fund, and more.

Held four times a year, Charter Guild meetings take place right on the campus of Wheeling Jesuit University. The first meeting is coming up at 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 6 in the Benedum Room. The annual dues are just $15 and members are not required to attend meetings.
