President Invites Alumni & Friends to Mass of the Holy Spirit and Unveils Theme for New Year

The Wheeling Jesuit University community invites alumni and friends to attend the Mass of the Holy Spirit at 11 a.m., Thursday, September 11, in the Chapel of Mary and Joseph.

"The Mass of the Holy Spirit is a tradition at Catholic colleges and universities worldwide, and it provides students, faculty, administrators, staff and alumni, the opportunity to call upon the Holy Spirit to recommit our mission - to educate men and women for life, leadership and service with others," says Rev. Joseph Hacala, S.J., President.

The Most Rev. Bernard Schmitt, Bishop of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston will preside the liturgy. Rev. Timothy Brown, S.J. provincial of the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus, will serve as the homilist. For more information on the event, contact Campus Ministry at 304-243-2385.

Fr. Hacala also announced that the University's Mission and Identity Committee chose Pacem in Terris (Peace on Earth) as the theme for the year in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Pope John XXIII's 1963 pastoral letter, and as a way to recognize Pope John Paul II's, January 2003 World Day of Peace message. The University will integrate the theme into activities and programs throughout the year.

"The papal messages are an invitation for the University community to be instruments of God's peace, in our own hearts, on our campus, in our local communities, in our homes and throughout the world," says Fr. Hacala. "The challenge to be peacemakers is an expectation for all of us in the year ahead."
