How to refer someone else to counseling?

• If you feel comfortable talking with the individual, express your concern and recommend sources of help.
  
• Call or have the individual call the center to arrange an appointment while they are with you.
  
• Offer to accompany the individual to the center if they are reluctant to go.
  
• Follow up with the individual later to confirm that they kept the appointment.

What is a mental health emergency or crisis?

• Suicidal ideas, threats, or attempts
  
• Incoherent and confused thoughts and/or bizarre behavior
  
• Rape/sexual assault

If an individual is losing control, going into a rage, making serious threats, or becoming violent, call 911 and Safety and Security immediately.

Mental Health Emergencies and Crisis Situations

Daytime Protocol (8:30 am - 5:00 pm)

• Notify the Wellness Center at 243-2275
  
• Notify Safety and Security at 243-2486 if there is a threat of physical harm

After-Hours Protocol

• If crisis occurs in a residence hall, notify the RA/AC who will then follow appropriate channels to notify crisis response team members.
  
• If a crisis occurs elsewhere on campus, notify Safety and Security who will then notify appropriate crisis response team members.
