Library Policies: Borrowing
WJU-Bishop Hodges Library circulates books and multimedia resources. All students and employees of the university are eligible to check out items from the library's collection. All borrowers are expected to present a valid WJU Cardinal Card to borrow items. The library reserves the right to refuse checkout of items unless a Cardinal Card is presented. Adult and/or distance learners who have not been issued a WJU Cardinal Card can request a "Special Borrowing Card" at the Circulation Desk. Borrowers are responsible for all items checked out on their Cardinal Card. Loan Periods – WJU Students & Employees
Renewals Items can be renewed unless another patron has placed a "hold" on the item. Items with a "hold" cannot be renewed. Items, without a "hold", may be renewed as needed. Holds Patrons can place a “hold” on an item that is checked out. This prevents the current borrower from renewing an item. When the item is returned, you will be notified and given 72 hours to pick up the item at the library. After 72 hours, the item is returned to the shelf. Returning Items Patrons are asked to return all items to the Circulation Desk when the library is open. The library does have a book drop that can be utilized when the library is closed. Patrons are advised not to leave items checked out on their Cardinal Card on tables in the library as these items are not considered returned. Overdue Items WJU Library Items: The Library expects all patrons to return borrowed items in a timely fashion. The Library does not charge fines, but does issue "overdue" notices. See Non-Returned Items below. Non-Returned/Damaged Items WJU Library items not returned within four weeks of the due date or returned damaged, will be subject to replacement charges. Replacement charges are calculated by adding the cost of the item plus a $10 processing fee. Student accounts will be billed for replacement costs by the Head of Circulation. Faculty will be sent a letter detailing costs. The library may also contact the chair of the faculty's department, if necessary. Extended Borrowing Loans Students working on extensive research projects such as a Senior Thesis may request an "extended borrowing loan." An "extended borrowing loan" can be one semester in length. If needed beyond one semester, a student should contact Barbara Julian, Head of Circulation, for a second "extended borrowing loan". Items may be subject to recall should another patron place a "hold" on an item. A recall request will not be issued until after the first three weeks of the checkout period. Course Reserve Materials Faculty regularly place items on “Reserve” in the library for use by students. Students may check items out according to the “check out policy” assigned by the professor. Items on reserve are usually designated with check out periods of: Room Use Only (12 hours), 1 Day, 2 Days, or 1 Week. VHS/DVD placed on reserve for Room Use Only may be viewed using the library’s TV – VHS/DVD. Alumni/WJU Community Borrowers Alumni and members of the WJU Community are eligible for borrowing privileges as follows:
