FIRSTSEARCH WORLDCAT INTERLIBRARY LOAN REQUEST INSTRUCTIONS

Go to the library website /library/and click on the following:

• Journals & Databases
• Databases
• Firstsearch Database Collection

Click on My Account
First-time users: Click on New User Registration and fill out all fields. Your user name and password must both be at least 8 characters. Click Register. You should now see your name at the top of the screen.

Returning users: Each time you start a new Firstsearch session please go to My Account, enter your user name and password and click on I agree to the terms and conditions so that your name is displayed. You will be able to login at a later time and click on Resource Sharing to see the status of all interlibrary loans you have placed while you were logged in. In addition, the interlibrary loan form will automatically fill in all of your contact information if you are logged in.

FOR BOOKS:                                  

• Click on Worldcat
• Enter your search criteria and click Search
  (You may want to select limit type to books)

Click on the item

(If you click on Libraries Worldwide it will show you a list of the libraries that own the item. This is helpful if you want to travel to a nearby library instead of waiting for an item to be sent. In some cases if your request comes back unfilled, you may have to travel to another library to use an item if they do not loan it out. Note: you are not picking what libraries receive your query; the software chooses based on profiles that WJU library set up.)

Click the ILL button       
(If WJU library owns the book the ILL button will not display)

Fill out the form completely. Please enter the date needed in the following format 20050101. The “amount you will pay” default is Free only. Some libraries charge for lending items. If you want to increase your chances of receiving an item you may want to choose another option from the drop-down box. Please note that whatever amount you choose is the amount you may have to pay the library for the service.

Click Submit

The following message should display:

*Click on Sign Out before exiting the database! 

Please note that the average time to receive an item is 2 weeks. Some items are received sooner and some later than 2 weeks. You should not submit a request if you need a book sooner than 5 business days because it will not come in time. A few items that are requested are unable to be filled. Libraries typically are reluctant to loan rare, valuable, or new materials. If you have questions about interlibrary loan, see Barb Julian at the circulation desk or call 243-2226.

FOR JOURNAL ARTICLES:

Warning!!!! FirstSearch does not track which electronic journals we own. It is your responsibility to check before placing an ILL request.

IF YOU HAVE AN ARTICLE CITATION BUT YOU CANNOT FIND THE ARTICLE,

THEN YOU WILL NEED TO SUBMIT THE INFORMATION TO OUR ILL DEPARTMENT BY USING THE FORM AVAILABLE AT:  /library/servicesandpolicies/interlib.asp

GENERAL NOTES:

THE LIBRARY IS SUPPORTING THIS AS ON CAMPUS USE ONLY.

(We tested off campus access and found it to be slow and unreliable. If you are able to use it off campus you may but it is too problematical at present for us to recommend off campus use.)

We are continuing to offer standard interlibrary loan services in the same ways we always have. This is simply another alternative.

This is a brand new software package which has some “bugs”! Known bugs include that the field Amount you will pay displays as Pickup location under the Resource sharing tab. This problem has been reported to OCLC.
