The Wheeling Jesuit community, lead by its women’s basketball team, is helping raise funds for a family in Massachusetts whose young son has a rare form of cancer.

Women’s basketball coach, Debbie Buff is assisting the cause to help 6-year-old Devin Suau. Earlier this year, Suau was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) and that’s when Buff and her basketball team took up his cause and supported the families social media/fund raising campaign -- #WhyNotDevin.buff.jpg

“Each year the women’s basketball team has taken on a service project – we’ve helped local groups and community agencies. After learning about Devin’s battle from close family friends and relatives of the Suau family, the Luibrands, the basketball team wanted to get involved.” Buff explained.

Since returning to campus, the women’s basketball team has made Suau an honorary team member and sends regular videos encouraging him to keep fighting.

Most recently, the team has undertaken a fundraising campaign to raise money to help Suau’s family with medical expenses and research. “Devin’s favorite super hero is the Green Lantern, so everything we are doing center’s around the color green,” she said.

This week, the team and coaches began selling green wrist bands that sport the #WhyNotDevin hashtag. They are planning to sell wristbands and take up collections next week during some of the Cardinals home sporting events. The campus will host a ‘Green Out Day’ Thursday, Sept. 28 when employees and students are encouraged to wear green in support of Devin.

Coach Buff said the team has set a goal to raise at least $3,000 in the next two weeks. “Every dollar we raise helps the family with expenses and research to find a cure for this disease.”
