Procedures to Be Followed in the Event of a Bomb Threat

I. PROCEDURES TO BE FOLLOWED BY ANY INDIVIDUAL RECEIVING A BOMB THREAT OR ANY OTHER THREAT TO THE SCHOOL OR TO AN INDIVIDUAL ON THE CAMPUS:

When you recognize that this is a threatening call remain as calm as possible. Try not to let yourself sound anxious. Try and sound as though nothing is out of the ordinary. While the conversation is going on, be alert for background noises and anything that may give authorities some hint as to where the call originated. Listen to the voice of the caller for anything that can help with identification such as: an accent, which could indicate nationality or regionality. Listen for the voice tone or slang expressions that give an indication as to age. Try to determine if the caller is male or female or if the person is trying to disguise his/her voice to sound like the opposite gender.

Keep the person on the line and, if possible, have someone contact Campus Safety & Security. When the call ends contact Safety & Security at extension 2486. Tell them you just received a bomb threat, and they will start the follow up process.

The questions to help you are:
  1. Excuse me. Who is this again?

  2. What or who is it you wanted?

  3. Where are you calling from?

  4. Why did you do that here?

  5. Where are/is the bomb(s) again?

  6. What time does it explode? How long did you say before it goes off?

  7. Now let me get this straight. You said [repeat it back to the person. You can make a mistake just to keep the person talking. This will help you get the information straight and also give you more time to listen to them.]
REMEMBER TRY TO REMAIN CALM. WHEN CALL IS COMPLETED
CONTACT CAMPUS SAFETY & SECURITY AT X2486.
