West Virginia Social Action Research Award

The West Virginia Social Action Research Award is given annually to the top research project concerning an important social action issue in the Mountain State. The Service for Social Action Center established this award to emphasize the role student research can have in serving our community. This award is given at the annual Wheeling Jesuit Student Research and Scholarship Symposium. There is a $50 dollar prize for each year's WV Social Action Award winner.

This year, 2008, the WV Social Action Research Award was given to Brittany Venci, a senior biology student, supervised my professor Ben Stout.  Venci's project, "Coal Slurry Reduction to Methane by Archaea," was developed to reduce coal slurry, one of Appalachia's largest contaminants, and possibly produce enough methane, in the process, to be used as a renewable energy resource.

In 2006, the WV Social Action Research Award was given to Fred Walker, a sophomore chemistry major from Charleston, WV. Walker was supervised by Dr. Baird of the Chemistry Department and won for his research on "The Assesment of Arsenic, Chromium and Copper Contamination from Pressure-treated Wooden Decks in Wheeling, WV." Walker's study explores the pollution problem that arsenic, leaking from a deck, can have on the surrounding area such as resident's health and the effects on local soil.

In 2005, the WV Social Action Award was given to Lannette Booth, a senior environmental studies major from Lake Jackson, Texas. Booth won for her research project " A Study of the Effects of Heavy Metals from Coal Fly Ash Contained in Little Blue Run Lake." Booth's study explores the pollution problems at Little Blue Run Lake in Chester, WV, and points out the possible community impact of this pollution if not properly cleaned up.
