Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J., Scholarship Program
Arrupe students are selected and given opportunities to develop as service leaders on campus and in the community. Arrupe scholars develop service opportunities, lead other students to participate in service projects at WJU, in the Wheeling community and to other parts of the United States. Arrupe scholars complete 66 hours of service per school year, primarily at one site in the Wheeling area. Students engage in monthly reflection activities regarding their service work in the community and students participate in an end of the year service immersion week in either East Wheeling, Southern West Virginia, Camden, NJ or an International trip to El Salvador.

Federal Community Service Work
The Federal Community Service Work (FCSW) program places students in our partner service agencies. They are paid by a federal program designed to help students with their tuition. Students are paid $5.50/hr and can work up to 15 hours per week in a local nonprofit organization.

Make-A-Difference Day
Make-A-Difference Day is a nationwide annual fall event. As part of a First Year Seminar course, all WJU freshmen participate in a Make-A-Difference Day by serving with a local community service agency such as Appalachian Outreach, Catholic Neighborhood Center, Faith In Action Caregivers, Wheeling Hospital Continuous Care Unit, Rails to Trails, Mount St. Joseph or Wheeling Soup Kitchen. Agency staff share information about their agency's mission and services to give students a complete overview of which community needs the organization addresses.

Mother Jones House
The Mother Jones House is an intentional service community of Wheeling Jesuit students located in East Wheeling. Students living in the house complete at least 10 hours of service a week at various community agency sites in the neighborhood but primarily Mother Jones House students serve at Laughlin Memorial Chapel in East Wheeling. The students also plan and participate in community prayer and community meals with house members, including the house mentor and invited inidividuals from campus and the Wheeling community. Students live and serve with the residents of East Wheeling and commute to campus for classes.

Service Floors/Quads
When students show sufficient interest, portions of Wheeling Jesuit University residence halls are designated as service communities. Students who live on these floors complete 3-5 hours of service per week in the community, eat communally and share prayer/reflection activities on a regular basis. Please contact the SSAC if you are interested in participating in a service floor or service quad.

Service Trips
In January of 2006 Wheeling Jesuit students made its first trip to New Orleans in an effort to help residents of Louisiana clean up after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Since then Wheeling Jesuit students, staff, and alumni have made seven trips to the gulf to help with recovery efforts. Each group worked with the Arch Diocese of New Orlean's Operation Helping Hands, which helps elderly, poor, and disabled folks rebuild their lives. If you are intertested in participating in a trip to New Orleans please contact the SSAC or check out our "Upcoming or Ongoing Service Projects" to find out when the next trip is scheduled.

The SSAC also sponsors service immersion trips to Southern West Virginia, Boston and Camden, NJ

This year health science students traveled down state to Southern West Virginia to provide health screenings, first aide and CPR classes, and health awareness to the people of Appalachia.  In an area with limited access to health care this provides students studying to become nurses, doctors, respiratory therapists and physical therapists the opportunity to get real world experience in their field of study while helping fill a need in the community.

The year students spent fall break and spring breaking at the Romero Center in Camden, NJ working with issues related to urban poverty.  Camden is one of the poorest cities in the United States so while in Camden students serve at a day shelter for the homeless, after school program while at risk children, HIV/AIDS drop-in center, soup kitchens, elderly centers and a wheel chair community for people with disabilities.

The Boston trip focused on social justice issues related to immigration and diversity.  Students that participated in this trip lived with the Sisters of St. Joseph and served at several different ministries such as Casserly House (Casserly offers tutoring in English and an after school program for children in the neighborhood), Grover Cleveland Adult Learning Center (students tutored English), Sacred Heart School, Women's Lunch Place, and Casa Nueva Vida (Bi-Lingual Women's Shelter).

Wellness Program
The Wellness Program provides opportunities for students to learn directly from agencies about their work. Agency representatives give 30-60 minute presentations/lectures on topics pertaining to their missions and activities.

Service Learning
Several courses at Wheeling Jesuit University offer students opportunities to apply academic concepts and skills to community-based service projects. Students reflect on how the service relates to the area of study and to their moral and civic responsibilities. Courses with service-learning components are posted on this website each semester.

United Way: Day of Caring
Each September the United Way hosts their annual campaign kick-off event, the Day of Caring.  Teamns of Wheeling Jesuit staff, faculty, and administrators spend the day serving with agencies all across the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia. Wheeling Jesuit teams have served at the YWCA, Russell Nesbit, St. Vincent DePaul's, Holy Family Childcare Center, Awakenings, and the Community Childcare Center.
