Local Service Events
Appalachian Outreach, Inc, - located in Glen Dale, WV is looking for students that are interested in helping with website maintenance, research on poverty in WV and students that are willing to help load trucks with donated goods that need transported to needy counties in southern, WV.
American Red Cross Blood Drive - Every Spring Wheeling Jesuit will be sponsoring a campus wide blood drive. All students, staff and faculty are encouraged to donate or volunteer to help with the event.
After School Programs - Every year WJU students get involved with a variety of after school programs including programs at Laughlin Chapel, through the Marshall County Youth Center, and the H.E.S.S. Program.
Disc Dance/Super Sunday - Each semester Wheeling Jesuit is host for a dance event for many of the local population who have mental disabilities. These events are always a ton of fun and is just another way for our student body to engage the community.
Federal Community Service Work Study - The Federal Community Service Work program places students in our partner service agencies. They are paid by a federal program designed to help students with their tuition. Students are paid $5.50/hr and can work up to 15 hours per week in a local nonprofit organization.
Make a Difference Day - Make-A-Difference-Day is a nationwide annual fall event. As part of a First Year Seminar course, all WJU freshmen participate in Make-A-Difference Day by serving with a local community service agency such as Appalachian Outreach, Catholic Neighborhood Center, Faith In Action Caregivers, Wheeling Hospital Continuous Care Unit, Rails to Trails, Mount St. Joseph or Wheeling Soup Kitchen. Agency staff share information about their agency's mission and services to give students a complete overview of which community needs the organization addresses.
Prison Ministry - Once a week throughout the semester Wheeling Jesuit students run faith sharing and life skill groups with incarcerated youth at the Northern Regional Juvenile Detention Center. If you are interested din participating in this meaningful service experience please contact the SSAC.
Special Olympics - Each year Wheeling Jesuit University hosts the Northern Panhandle Special Olympics. Wheeling Jesuit uses over 250 volunteers to make this event a great success. Planning will begin shortly. If you would like to get involved please contact the SSAC.
United Way Day of Caring - Each year the United Way hosts their annual campaign kickoff event, the Day of Caring. Teams of Wheeling Jesuit staff, faculty and administrators spend the day serving with agencies all across the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia. Wheeling Jesuit teams have served at the YWCA, Russell Nesbit, St. Vincent DePaul's and Holy Family Childcare.
