Wheeling Jesuit University is enhancing its fine and performing arts programs, with music as a central element. With two bands and four choirs, students have many opportunities to participate in the University's musical life, regardless of their majors. And with the late-fall 2013 opening of the Mount de Chantal Conservatory of Music at Wheeling Jesuit University, students will have a central area for music practice, classes and performance.
Wheeling Jesuit students can supplement their music studies by attending Wheeling Symphony Orchestra concerts free of charge. This wonderful opportunity is made possible through WJU's sponsorship of the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra's College Concert Series. Performed in downtown Wheeling's historic Capitol Music Hall, concerts feature this first-class professional orchestra along with internationally known guest artists.
Through the University's partnership with River City Brass (RCB) of Pittsburgh, student musicians have the opportunity to perform with the RCB under the direction of renowned conductor and instrumentalist Dr. James Gourlay. Maestro Gourlay is music director of the RCB as well as director of instrumental music and university bands at WJU. He conducts the WJU Symphonic Band and coordinates the Pep Band, and he facilitates the Brass Summer School held annually at Wheeling Jesuit.
Students can receive academic credit for their participation. Those interested in the bands are encouraged to apply for a Symphonic and/or Pep Band Music Award. Applicants will be contacted directly by Dr. Gourlay with more information.
Vocalists have opportunities to sing with the WJU Chamber Singers, who perform several times each year, and the Campus Ministry Choirs, which assist at masses in the chapel. Choral groups are under the direction of Robert Troeger, who also serves as music director at St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Wheeling. Choral scholarships are available as well.
