MISSION:
To enhance student retention and academic performance through mentoring.

OBJECTIVE:
The Mentoring Program is designed to help our Multicultural Students to successfully adjust to all aspects of college life. The program is mainly intended for students who are identified by the OMA through a variety of criteria. There are many factors that can affect a student’s progress and we plan to consider all elements.

GENERAL GUIDELINE:

FOR MENTORS:

·         Spend approximately 6 hours per month with your mentee.

·         Some activities to be considered: phone conversation, email, lunch, church service, community events, family brunch, etc.

·         The key is to build a strong and supportive relationship with your mentee.

·         Attend a monthly Mentor-Mentee Social Event to stay connected with other Multicultural students and the campus community.

·         Communicate with an appointed OMA staff regularly regarding your mentor-mentee relationship.

·         An online feedback form will be available for mentors on our website soon.

·         For more information, visit our website: www.wju.edu/studentlife/oma

FOR WJU STUDENTS:

·         Sign up through the OMA if you would like to have a mentor.

·         A mentor will be assigned to you based on commonality (major, interests, background etc).

·         A freshman will be mentored both by an upper classman and a professional.  Upperclassmen will receive a working professional as a mentor. A relationship with a mentor should be fun, strengthening and empowering.

MENTOR-MENTEE SOCIAL EVENTS

Purpose:
To provide an atmosphere where mentors/mentees can build their relationship in an open, relaxed environment while exchange ideas with others. Also, there are a variety of learning opportunities including guest speakers and entertainment. Those who are not participating but would like to support the OMA and the Mentor program may attend these events as well.

  • This event will be held once a month (3 times per semester)
  • Programs for this event will be determined at a later date.
Possible programs: Guest speakers, music events, fun outing (bowling, cookout etc.)
