Respect Zone

Mission of the Program:

The RESPECT ZONE program at Wheeling Jesuit University exists to offer support and foster respect for the diverse populations that make up our university community. Through the RESPECT ZONE program, members of the university community are invited to practice justice by incorporating the WJU diversity statement into their daily lives. Individuals and offices that display the RESPECT ZONE logo are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for all, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, national origin, religion, age, disability, marital status, and sexual orientation.

Wheeling Jesuit University Diversity Statement:

Wheeling Jesuit University’s diversity statement is to ensure fair treatment to all members of the university community. The mission of the University is to educate for leadership, educate for life, and educate men and women for others. Rooted in the rich Catholic and Ignatian traditions, Wheeling Jesuit affirms that all reality is the work of a loving Creator in whose image and likeness we are made. Wheeling Jesuit’s goal is to help individuals develop a deep respect for all persons, resulting in a desire to know and learn from men and women from various cultural, religious and racial backgrounds. Dialogue among differing worldviews is vital to the goals of a Jesuit education. Therefore, Wheeling Jesuit welcomes men and women from a rich variety of spiritual and ethnic traditions. Wheeling Jesuit University does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, ethnicity, national origin, religion, age, disability, marital status, and sexual orientation in accordance with applicable federal and state laws. A grievance procedure is available to all members of the university community in cases of discrimination and harassment.

How the RESPECT ZONE Program Works:

Individuals who have posted a RESPECT ZONE sticker in their offices have participated in training in the following areas:

  • Developing a sensitivity to diversity issues in general
  • Multicultural awareness
  • Disability awareness
  • Gender awareness
  • GLBT awareness
  • Resources on and off campus, and making referrals

Students who want support regarding any of these areas may talk with a RESPECT ZONE participant. Look for the red and white RESPECT ZONE sticker on office doors around campus.
