The Value of a Jesuit Education
Wheeling Jesuit University, one of 28 colleges and universities in the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence and service to others, educates the whole person-- caring for the mind, body and spirit of each student.
The heart of a Jesuit education lies in learning to discern God’s will in our lives, and applying that knowledge to all we are and do. You will be provided opportunities to hone your written and verbal skills, using creativity and reason, so that you can be confident of success in the world and, more importantly, as capable leaders in service to others. Discernment allows you to direct your life to a Christ-like giving of yourself to others, and to become a faith-filled person, motivated by love of God and others in such a way that you make your life decisions more for the glory of God and service to your community, than merely for your own personal desires.
We provide opportunities for ongoing development of your imagination, conscience and intellect, and encourage and help you recognize new experiences as opportunities for further growth. We want you to see service to others as more self-fulfilling than just success or prosperity.
Four values serve as foundational principles for Wheeling Jesuit, incarnated in the charism and 450-year tradition of the Society of Jesus:
1) "finding God in all things" -- An ongoing process of discernment is at the heart of Jesuit spirituality and education. This process of discernment calls us to recognize, and then choose, good and reject evil; and to experience the presence of God in all of creation.
2) "Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam," "to the greater glory of God" Put simply, the founder of the Society of Jesus, St. Ignatius Loyola, meant that regardless of who we are, or what we do, all that we do should focus on seeking and serving "the greater glory of God," the God Who created us and Who sustains us.
3) "the magis" -- Ignatius placed great emphasis on seeking, in every choice we make, the decision that would result in the "greater good."
4) Integrating the service of Faith and the promotion of Justice In its now-historic mission document of 1975, the Society of Jesus defined our raison d'etre in these words: "the mission of the Society of Jesus today is the service of faith, of which the promotion of justice is an absolute requirement."*¹ All that we do should focus on a larger social dimension, and a clear commitment to the full human development of all peoples. In educational terms, the goals of a Jesuit education, are the education of "men and women for others," men and women who are "agents for change."²
