Mission & Identity

The Office of Mission and Identity invites the active engagement of the entire Wheeling Jesuit University community, across all our faith traditions and human ideals, in living out our university's Catholic, Jesuit mission.

Mission & Identity:

INTRODUCES  new members of the WJU community to the culture and values of the University.

SUPPORTS  faculty, staff, administrators, students, alumni, and trustees in their professional and personal exploration of the WJU's mission.

OFFERS  opportunities for reflection and discussion on the integration of mission with daily work.

PROVIDES  mission-related resources for teaching, research, and administration.

PROMOTES, with others, the creation of a learning community rooted in the Catholic intellectual tradition manifest in Jesuit education.

The Father John Coll, S.J., Office of Mission & Identity

WJU's Class of 1963 generously funds initiatives promoting our Catholic Jesuit mission in honor of Fr. John Coll, S.J., their class moderator, who served WJU for over 20 years. Fr. Coll was born on June 11, 1926, in Pittsburgh, Pa. He entered the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus on Feb. 1, 1944, and was ordained June 17, 1956. From 1958-1967, he taught ethics at Wheeling College and returned in 1997 to serve as assistant to the rector and pastoral minister. Fr. Coll moved to the Colombiere Jesuit Community in Baltimore in 2011 and then to Manresa Hall Community in Philadelphia in 2016, praying for the Church and the Society of Jesus. He died on July 30, 2017 at the age of 91. The Jesuit community at Wheeling Jesuit University also significantly funds mission efforts.
Ignatian Prayer

Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding and my entire will, All I have and call my own.

You have given all to me. To you, Lord, I return it.

Everything is yours; do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your grace. That is enough for me.

- St. Ignatius of Loyola
