Wheeling Jesuit’s Dr. Andrew Staron to offer talk at John Carroll University’s Institute of Catholic Studies lecture series this March.

Staron’s lecture, “Naming God: St. Augustine’s Rhetoric of Love- The Augustine Lecture,” is part of John Carroll’s year-long speaker series. img_0236.jpgHe will speak Thursday, March 22 at the D.J. Lombardo Student Center’s LSC Conference Room.  The lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public.

Each year the Institute of Catholic Studies at John Carroll University brings to its students, faculty, and the broader community a group of experts on issues of contemporary relevance to the Catholic intellectual tradition and Jesuit higher education.

The Cleveland native and assistant professor of Theology and Religious Studies at WJU said this is the first time he will speak at John Carroll. “This is an honor and delight to speak about my favorite topic – St. Augustine,” he said.

“Augustine is particularly attentive to the ways in which our language and emotion shape our thoughts and hopes – a relationship that becomes all the more important when we consider how Christianity has thought about and addressed God. My talk will consider three areas: the power of beautiful and compelling language; the way in which language shapes our love; and, finally; what we hope for when we proclaim that ‘God is love,’” Staron explained.

Much of his talk is based on the writings in his book, “The Gift of Love – Augustine, Jean – Luc Marion and the Trinity.”
