The Wheeling Jesuit University community is once again making Christmas brighter for young and old in the Wheeling area.

The university’s Service for Social Action Center spearheaded a number of holiday giving projects that helped three local agencies - St. wju-giving-web.jpgJohn’s Home, Florence Crittenton and Laughlin Chapel - meet the needs of people they serve.

Colleen Ryan Mayrand said helping these agencies allows the WJU students, employees and friends give back to those in the community.

“Our mission calls us to be men and women with and for others. During the Christmas season, as people of faith, we are called to wake up and look at the needs right here in our local community, this giving project is just one small way we can help,” Ryan Mayrand explained.

In all, members of Wheeling Jesuit donated gifts to these local partners, she said. St. John's Home and Florence Crittenton provided gift tags in which individuals asked for anything from toys and clothing, to towels and books. While at Laughlin Chapel, WJU members donated gifts cards, to allow the Chapel’s staff to take the children shopping.

“Employees, students and community members participate, because they want to help others. Many in the WJU community are engaged in the Wheeling community – they see people in the city who are in need, and they want to help,” she added.

In addition to helping the three local organizations, the SSAC purchase  gifts for the 49 young people in the HESS Mentoring Program.

Wheeling Jesuit students, who serve as mentors to local grade school and middle school students, picked out and gave their mentee a gift. A grant from the HESS Family Foundation provided the funding for the gifts.

“It’s wonderful to see so many of our students and employees participate in our Christmas giving projects. They truly embody our mission – to serve and help others,” Ryan Maynard noted.

The Wheeling Jesuit community has helped other local organizations this Christmas season. Members of the WJU men’s lacrosse team purchased and donated more than 75 toys to Catholic Charities in Wheeling earlier this month. Additionally, Wheeling Jesuit nursing students made blankets for patients in Wheeling Hospital’s Department of Pediatrics.
