"Finding the right leader who possesses the integrity and character needed to lead Wheeling University Athletics, a strong and proven record of success and excellent management and interpersonal skills was very important to us," said President Favede. "We were looking for someone who wants to be at Wheeling University, and who believes all of our programs can compete and win at every level. Garrett Sherman is absolutely the best person to lead Wheeling University Athletics to a new era of success."

The Cumberland, Maryland native's resume includes experience at collegiate athletic departments in Maryland, Georgia, Wyoming and Maine on the NJCAA, NAIA and NCAA Division I levels. Prior to WVU Potomac State, Sherman served as the Athletic Director at the University of Maine at Fort Kent. While at UMFK, an NAIA Institution, he managed an athletic department with several varsity sports.

In 2017 Sherman was named Assistant Women's Basketball Coach at the University of Maine. He helped lead the Black Bears to the 2017-18 America East Conference Regular Season and Tournament Championships and an appearance in the NCAA Division I Tournament.

Sherman's collegiate athletic career began in 2006 as an assistant men's basketball coach on NJCAA level at Allegany College of Maryland (ACM). In 2008, Sherman was named the Head Women's Basketball Coach at ACM and quickly revitalized the program earning Maryland JUCO, Region XX and District J Basketball Coach of the Year honors in 2009 and again in 2011. While at ACM Sherman also held the roles of Physical Education Instructor and Assistant Facilities Supervisor.

In 2012 Sherman accepted the position of Head Women's basketball at Gordon State College (NJCAA) in Barnesville, Georgia and the challenge to build that program from scratch. Although his program and others were dropped due to budget cuts, he spent a year as the assistant men's basketball coach and assistant athletic director and was eventually elevated to men's head coach.

Sherman returned to women's basketball in 2014 when he was named Head Women's Basketball Coach and Director of Games Management at Western Wyoming Community College (NJCAA) in Rock Springs, Wyoming. He led his team from the bottom of the region standings to a championship season during his third year, culminating with a nod as NJCAA Region IX Coach of the Year in 2017.

Sherman received his Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education in 2003 and his Master of Education, Administration and Supervision in 2005, both from Frostburg State University. Sherman and his wife Ayoola are the proud parents to three children; Trey, Cameron and Iyla.
